From the beginning, Copenhagen Merchants was built around personal responsibility and close market relationships. Family ownership has allowed that approach to continue as the group has grown.
In 2016, the second generation took over the day-to-day leadership of the group. We continue to take a long view when the commercial logic is there - while keeping responsibility close to the people who know the market, the client or the asset best.
A few defining moments in our history
Where it all began
1977
Copenhagen Merchants is founded by Torben Christensen as an agricultural commodity brokerage business, initially run from the basement of his family home.
Into terminal infrastructure
1984
Copenhagen Merchants makes its first investment in an agri-bulk terminal together with Schultz Shipping - bringing the business closer to the physical handling of commodities.
From market knowledge to digital intelligence
2018
Copenhagen Merchants begins developing CM Navigator - turning agri-commodity and freight market knowledge into a digital market intelligence platform.
Navi Merchants is born
2021
The group’s chartering activities become Navi Merchants, a dedicated dry bulk shipping business built around agricultural and other bulk commodity flows.

Into battery energy storage
2025
CM Batteries is established as Copenhagen Merchants Group enters battery energy storage systems (BESS) - bringing asset ownership and commercial market thinking into energy infrastructure.

T.W. Heart is our slightly unusual reminder of that: curious, adaptable and able to act through several arms as one organism. That felt strangely familiar.
